The project is built in one of Sydney exclusive suburbs, Castlecrag. The house is a contemporary building build entirely from concrete and is clad in Corten steel. The project looks over a branch of Sydney Harbour called Middle Cove. The building produces its own solar energy from a large array of panels beside the Greenroof.
Evolvement designed the Greenroof buildup, irrigation system and plant pallet for the project. 1000 plants in a variety of species provide variety in colour, texture and flowering seasons. Plants were propagated and grown in the Evolvement nursery specifically for this project aspect.
The roof features a fully automated watering systems that is controlled wirelessly. A temporary overhead system has been installed for Sydney’s extreme summer temperature. Grey gravel mulch was chosen to match the concrete building structures modernity. The planting is already providing food for a number of pollinators including butterfly’s, Hover Fly’s, Native bees and Honey Bees.
Urbanscape® Green Roof ensures a long lasting cooling effect due to the high water storage capacity. The roof only allowed a depth of 100mm meaning a specific design was required to allow great plant growth. Reducing heat gain due to the thermal mass, extra insulation, and evapotranspiration associated with the vegetative roofing systems. This has the reverse effect through the seasons. The green softening designed to cascade over the concrete façade will be inspiring.
